Petaling Jaya · Reading Group

I had already signed a mortgage document years ago but had never properly understood the section on redemption. The reading group gave me the vocabulary to go back and read it properly. Rania is a very patient facilitator — she never made me feel slow for asking questions that others might have found obvious.

Bangsar South · Workshop

The two-evening workshop was a good starting point. I went in knowing almost nothing about how mortgage documents are structured and came out with a working sense of the layout and the most common terms. The glossary has been on my desk since. I would have liked a third session to go deeper into the clause language, but as a foundation it did the job well.

Cheras · Annual Track

Nine months in and the annual track has changed how I approach any formal document, not just mortgage-related ones. The quarterly assignments were the part I didn't expect to enjoy as much as I did — working through a section on your own, then discussing it the following month, really consolidates the vocabulary.

Kepong · Reading Group

I enrolled primarily because a property purchase I was looking into involved documents I didn't feel I could read properly. The reading group didn't tell me what to do — which is exactly what I wanted. It helped me understand what I was looking at, which was enough. Siew Chen runs a very calm session.

Shah Alam · Workshop

A useful two evenings. I went with my sister and we both came away with a better sense of how documents are laid out and what to look for in the main sections. The printed glossary is something we have both referenced since. The location in Bangsar was easy for us to get to from Shah Alam via LRT.

Damansara · Annual Track

I was initially unsure whether a full year was the right commitment. In practice, one session a month sits very comfortably alongside a full work schedule. What I appreciate most is that the topics rotate — by the end of the year, you have read across quite a wide range of document types and vocabulary rather than the same material in slightly different order.

Participant Journeys

Stories From Past Cohorts

Story 01 · Workshop Participant

Challenge

Mei Ling, an executive based in KL Sentral, had received a stack of documents related to a property she was in the process of exploring. She felt unable to read them independently and was uncertain which sections required the most attention.

Programme

She enrolled in the two-evening Reading Mortgage Documents workshop. Over two sessions, she worked through document layout and the vocabulary section with a small group, taking away a printed glossary at the end of the first evening.

Outcome

After the workshop, Mei Ling felt comfortable identifying the key sections of a standard document and locating the terms she had encountered previously. She described the experience as "giving the documents a shape they didn't have before."

"The documents didn't change — but how I saw them did. That's all I needed from the two evenings."

Story 02 · Reading Group Participant

Challenge

Hafiz, a civil servant in Putrajaya, had signed mortgage documents some years prior and later found himself unable to explain specific clauses to a family member who was asking questions. He wanted to understand the language more thoroughly.

Programme

He joined the six-week Mortgage Literacy Reading Group, attending each Wednesday evening session in Bangsar. The group worked through clause structures in weeks three and four, which addressed exactly the vocabulary that had been unclear to him.

Outcome

By the final session, Hafiz had developed a reliable vocabulary for the sections of documents he had previously found impenetrable. He continued using the reading companion independently after the programme concluded.

"Six weeks is the right length — long enough to go properly deep without becoming a burden on top of a working week."
